In case you couldn’t tell, I kind of like Pearl Jam set lists. I made this tumblr because I had a handful of scans that were shared by like-minded fans. What I didn’t expect was an entire community of people to start sharing their set lists and growing this site into what it is now. I’m very thankful for everyone’s contributions.
While this isn’t a set list, it is a very cool artifact I want to share with you. This is what is referred to as a “Master Song List.” A master song list is a list of all the songs the band could possibly play during a show. This list is what Ed uses when he compiles a set lists. He picks and chooses from this list. Anything on this list is a song the band has practiced before the tour/show and are capable of playing. Ed’s tech will also have a copy of this master list as this is what each tech will refer to when tuning guitars.
This particular master song list is from their 1993 tour. It’s an amazing piece of Pearl Jam history as you can see how big their repertoire was getting at that time. Two full albums (with a large amount from Vitalogy and No Code), a bunch of covers (“Street Fighting Man” is even on there), some b-sides, some real rarities like “Speedwash” and a few songs which now have different names. Most notably “100 Pacer” is now known as “Lukin” and “Already In Love” is now known as “Satan’s Bed.” There’s also “Black Circles.” I don’t even know what that one is.
To make this artifact even cooler, It’s written on the back of an old concert poster. Anyone who was at the June 17th Spokane, WA show might remember this little poster/flyer. I actually just posted this show’s set list the other day. How’s that for convenience?
Anyway, I hope you like this sort of thing. It’s certainly not something you’ll see every day so I hope you appreciate it as much as I do. To me, this master song list is the seed to Ed’s set lists every night. To see him concoct a set list every night from this sheet is something that’s really cool to think about.
